   It is / let it be
The World, the material Universe; Eä, meaning in Elvish "It is" or "Let it be", was the Word of Ilúvatar when the World began its existence.

Eärendil
Son of Tuor and Idril Turgon's daughter, born in Gondolin; wedded Elwing daughter of Dior Thingol's Heir; father of Elrond and Elros; sailed with Elwing to Aman and pleaded for help against Morgoth; set to sail the skies in his ship Vingilot bearing the Silmaril of Lúthien.

Eärendur
(1) Younger brother of Tar-Elendil, born in the year 361 of the Second Age.
(2) Fifteenth Lord of Andunië, brother of Lindorië, grandmother of Tar-Palantir.

Earnil
Earnil II Thirty-second King of Gondor, victor over the Haradrim and the Wainriders in TA 1944.

Eärnur
Thirty-third and last King of Gondor; died in Minas Morgul.

Eärwen
Daughter of King Olwë of Alqualondë, wife of Finarfin, and mother of Finrod, Orodreth, Angrod, Aegnor, and Galadriel.

East Beleriand

East Bight
The great indentation in the eastern border of Mirkwood.

East Lórien   East Lórien
Southern Mirkwood after the defeat of Dol Guldur by the forces of Lothlórien.

East-mark
The eastern half of Rohan in the military organisation of the Rohirrim, bounded from the West-mark by the Snowbourn and theEntwash.

Easterlings
(1) In the First Age, Men who entered Beleriand in the time after the Dagor Bragollach, fought on both sides in the Nirnaeth Arnoëdiad, and were afterwards given Hithlum as a dwelling-place by Morgoth, where they oppressed the remnant of the People of Hador. Called In Hithlum Incomers.
(2) In the Third Age, a general term for the waves of Men driving in upon Gondor from the eastern regions of Middle-earth. See Wainriders.

Eastfold
A part of Rohan on the northern slopes of Ered Nimrais, east of Edoras. (The element fold is derived from Anglo-Saxon folde "earth, ground, land, region", as also in The Folde.)

Echad i Sedryn   Camp of the Faithful
Name given to the refuge of Túrin and Beleg on Amon Rûdh.

Echoing Mountains

Echoriath
The mountains encircling Tumladen, the plain of Gondolin.

Ecthelion
(1) Elf of Gondolin, called "Lord of the Fountains" and "Warden of the Great Gate".
(2) Twenty-fifth Ruling Steward of Gondor, the second of the name; father of Denethor II.

Edain
Descendants of the three Houses of Men that entered Beleriand in the First Age to aid the Eldar in their war with Morgoth.

Edhellond   Elf-haven
Harbor in Belfalas near the confluence of the rivers Morthond and Ringló, north of Dol Amroth. Called Amroth's Haven.

Edoras   Courts
Name in the Mark-speech of the royal town of Rohan on the northern edge of Ered Nimrais.

Eighteenth Ruling Steward of Gondor.

Eglarest
The southernmost of the Havens of the Falas on the coast of Beleriand.

éherë
Term used by the Rohirrim for the full muster of their cavalry.

Eilenach
Second of the beacons of Gondor in Ered Nimrais, the highest point of the Drúadan Forest.

Eilenaér
Pre-númenórean name (related to Eilenach) of Amon Anwar (Halifirien).

Eithel Ivrin

Eithel Sirion   Well of Sirion
In the eastern face of Ered Wethrin; used with reference to the Noldorin fortress (Barad Eithel) at that place.

Ekkaia

Elanor
(1) A small golden star-shaped flower that grew both in Tol Eressea and in Lothlórien.
(2) Daughter of Samwise Gamgee, named after the flower.

Elatan of Andunie
Númenórean, husband of Silmariën, father of Valandil first Lord of Andunië.

Elbereth

Eldar
The Elves of the Three Kindreds (Vanyar, Noldor, and Teleri, see a table showing the Sundering of the Elves). Eldarin (tongues) are Quenya, and Sindarin and others derived from these two.

Eldacar
Rightful successor of Valacar, king of Gondor. Regains the throne from Castamir the usurper in TA 1447.

Eldalondë   Haven of the Eldar
Harbor inn the Bay of Eldanna at the mouth of the river Nunduinë in Númenor; called "the Green".

Great bay in the west of Númenor, so called "because it faced towards Eressea" (i.e. Elda(r)+suffix -(n)na of movement towards).

Elendil the Tall
Son of Amandil, last Lord of Andunië, descended from Eärendil and Elwing but not of the direct line of the Kings of Númenor;escaped with his sons Isildur and Anárion from the Drowning of Númenor (Akallabêth) and founded the Numenórean realms in exile in Middle-earth; slain with Gil-galad in the otherthrow of Sauron at the end of the Second Age. Called "the Faithful" (Voronda).

The white gem borne as the token of royalty on the brows of the Kings of Arnor.

Elessar   Elfstone
(1) A great green jewel of healing power made in Gondolin for Idril Turgon's daughter, who gave it to Eärendil her son; the Elessar that Arwen gave to Aragorn II being either Eärendil's jewel returned or another. The "Stone of EärendiI".
(2) The name foretold for Aragorn by Olorin, and the name in which he became King of the reunited realm.

Rider of Rohan; with Grimbold leader of the Rohirrim in the Second Battle of the Fords of lsen; routed the invaders of Anórien; under King Éomer Marshal of the East-mark.

Elf of Doriath, younger brother of Elwë (Thingol) and Olwë of Alqualondë; according to one account grandfather of Celeborn.

Elostirion
Tallest of the White Towers on Emyn Beraid, in which was placed the Palantír called the Elendil Stone.

Elrohir
Son of Elrond, twin-brother of Elladan.

Elrond
Son of Eärendil and Elwing, brother of Elros Tar-Minyatur; at the end of the First Age chose to belong to the Firstborn, and remained in Middle-earth until the end of the Third Age; master of Imladris, and keeper of Vilya, the Ring of Air, which he received from Gil-galad.

Elros Tar Minyatur
Son of Eärendil and Elwing, brother of Elrond; at the end of the First Age chose to be numbered among Men, and became the first King of Númenor, called Tar-Minyatur.

Elú Thingol
Sindarin form of Elwë Singollo. Brother of Olwë and with him leader of the last host of Eldar (Teleri) from Cuivíenen. When he meets Melian the Maia he weds her and abandons his aim to go to Valinor and remains in Beleriand to become King of Doriath and of the Teleri who stay in Middle-earth and become the Sindar.

Elwing
Daughter of Dior Thingol's Heir, who escaping from Doriath with the Silmaril wedded Eärendil at the Mouths of Sirion and went with him to Aman; mother of Elrond and Elros.

Region of sheep pasturage in the Mittalmar (Inlands) of Númenor.

Name given to Queen Tar-Ancalimë of Númenor in her youth.

Third son of Brego the second king of Rohan; ancestor of Éomer.

Eöl
The 'Dark Elf' of Nan Elmoth, father of Maeglin.

Éomer
Nephew and fosterson of King Théoden; at the time of the War of the Ring Third Marshal of the Mark; after Théoden's death eighteenth King of Rohan; friend of King Elessar.

Éomund
(1) Chief captain of the host of the Éotheod at the time of the Ride of Eorl.
(2) Chief Marshal of the Mark of Rohan; wedded Theódwyn sister of Théoden; father of Éomer and Éowyn.

Eonwë
One of the mightiest of the Maiar, called the Herald of Manwë; leader of the host of the Valar in the attack on Morgoth at the endof the First Age.

éored
A body of the Riders of the Éothéod.

Eorl the Young
Lord of the Éothéod; rode from his land in the far North to the aid of Gondor against the invasion of the Balchoth; received Calenardhon in gift from Cirion Steward of Gondor; first King of Rohan.

Éorlings
The people of Eorl, the Rohirrim.

Éothéod
Name of the people afterwards called the Rohirrim, and also of their land.

Éowyn
Sister of Éomer, wife of Faramir ; slayer of the Lord of the Nazgûl in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields .

An 'after-name' received by one of the Eldar in addition to the given names (essi).

large black stone in the shape of a globe brought out of Númenor and placed at the southern feet of Ered Nimrais.

The mountain chain south of Dorthonion and north of Nan Dungortheb.

Another name for Ered Luin.

Mountain range forming the northern border of Mordor.

Moutain range orming the west-fence of Hithlum.

The great mountain-chain (also called Ered Lindon) separating Beleriand from Eriador in the First Age, and after the destruction at the end of the First Age forming the north-western coastal range of Middle-earth.

Ered Nimrais   White-horn Mountains
The great range in Gondor from east to west south of Rohan.

Ered Wethrin   Mountains of Shadow
The great curving mountain-range bordering Anfauglith on the west and on the south forming the barrier between Hithlum and West Beleriand.

Eregion   Land of Holly
Called by Men "Hollin"; Noldorin realm founded in the Second Age by Galadriel and Celeborn, in close association with Khazad-dûm; destroyed by Sauron.

Ereinion   Scion of Kings
Given name of Gil-galad.

Erelas
Fourth of the beacons of Gondor in Ered Nimrais. (Probably a pre-númenórean name; although the name is Sindarin in style it has no suitable meaning in that language. 'It was a green hill without trees, so that neither er- "single" nor las(s) "leaf" seem applicable.')

Erendis
Wife of Tar-Aldarion (cf. Story of "the Mariner's Wife"), between whom there was great love that turned to hatred; mother of Tar-Ancalimë. Called the "Lady of the Westlands".

A wind out of Angband that brought sickness to Dor-lómin, from which Turin's sister Urwen (Lalaith) died.
